Guilt-Free Formula to Enjoying Food & Wine in Social Situations?

I hope you had a chance to read my first article, How to “Have Your Wine and Drink it Too” in the New Year” as part of my “Attitude Matters Series” about Food, Health, Wellness and Entertainment. As promised, I will be sharing my “Easy as 1-2-3” formula for enjoying food, wine and fun in social situations – GUILT FREE.

First, I want to tell you my Word for 2016. FOCUS. There are several acronyms for FOCUS; abbreviations for societies or non-profits and internet slang. My inspiration for choosing FOCUS is the actual definition - the center of interest or activity, and this acronym:

This year my center of interest and activity – FOCUS - is going to be Online ventures. Business and Social. My website, OnlineWinandDine.com, Blogging, Guest Posts, Facebook Groups and Fan pages, Meet Up Groups, Instagram, and Periscope!

This year my center of interest and activity – FOCUS - is going to be Online ventures. Business and Social. My website, OnlineWinandDine.com, Blogging, Guest Posts, Facebook Groups and Fan pages, Meet Up Groups, Instagram, and Periscope!

LGBTWeddings.com is a big part of that FOCUS – I want to provide amazing online resources for this community --- Recipes, Health Tips, Food & Wine Pairing plans, Meal Plans, Entertaining Ideas and so much more!

Does that mean I’m not going to meet anyone in person? Heck NO! Face to Face interactions are easy and come naturally to me, which is why I chose the word FOCUS for my Online ventures!

Now, let’s look at my “Easy as 1-2-3” formula for enjoying food, wine and fun in social situations – GUILT FREE.

How often have you felt GUILTY about: 1. Happy Hour drinks 2. Bar Food at the Happy Hour where you had the drinks 3. Chowing down on appetizers at a party 4. Eating out at a restaurant 5. Ordering dessert 6. After Dinner Drinks 7. A buffet..

This list could go on for days! No matter what the situation, you’ll be able to apply my Easy as 1-2-3 Formula! In my book, Psyched to be Skinny, my co-author and I identified 10 different types of emotional eaters – bored, anxious, depressed, period eater etc..

One of the most common is The Situational Eater. The Situational Eater uses an event as an excuse to over-indulge. You may related to one of my individual healthy lifestyle coaching clients Donna, who had lost 20# and was getting ready to go on vacation. She said - “too bad I’m going to gain it all back!”

Her mindset was that she was going to gain weight on vacation, and also that she was going to “pig out” the entire time! I was able to work with her thought process and give her some new strategies and ways to think about enjoying food and vacation and not gain weight! If your wedding is this year you will all have a LOT of “situations” coming up in the next several months! I want to share 3 Super Guilt Free Strategies to get your Mind “set” for these upcoming months

Guilt-Free Formula to Enjoying Food & Wine in Social Situations?

1. One Deep Breath Breathe in – a super deep breath, and now exhale. Do you notice how that short exercise clears your mind and gives you a lighter feeling? The short pause of the breath will help you be mindful before you enter a situation. Take a deep breath in the car before going in to a restaurant, or hesitate slightly to breath before entering a room. Do this throughout the event, when you excuse yourself to use the restroom, take a deep breath before you return. This will keep your mind calm and make it easier to make healthier choices rather than diving in to the appetizer table with no holds barred.

2. Two Fisted Drinking ?I’m not talking about young party and college days where you had a Beer in one hand and a Shot of tequila in the other! The Easy as 1,2,3 Formula 2 Fisted drinking model is that you have your glass of wine or cocktail in one hand and WATER or sparkling water in the other! Be sure to drink a full glass of water or more for every drink you have. This will help you consume fewer calories of alcohol, and stay more hydrated (which will minimize feeling hungover) And guess what, if both of your hands are holding a glass – you can’t pick up any food!!

3. Three Polite Bites ?I talk about this one a lot and it is in my book. When you take the FIRST bite of food…perhaps it’s a loaded cheeseburger, or a chocolate lava cake… that is when you get that fantastic taste sensation…OH, this is SOOO good… Savor that bite. You will get a similar sensation on bite 2; and it is pretty much done by your 3rd polite bite. As you continue eating it all pretty much tastes the same.

Don’t you feel better knowing that you have a plan in place as you are doing tastings for your wedding dinner, attending showers and other celebrations? My Easy as 1-2-3 Formula is an example of the Lifestyle Hacks that I love to share; they are small simple things you can do that actually make a big impact - and you aren’t depriving yourself – you are living a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
