Jessica, tell us about the proposal

We proposed to one another (separately!). Our first proposal was when Molly flew to San Francisco for NYE in 2015. We were engaged almost exactly one year when her parents hosted an engagement party in the summer of 2015 in England for our second proposal. During our engagement we did a lot of traveling back and forth between the U.S. and England. It was a very special time for us.

I will never forget the day of the ruling. I was at a library conference in San Francisco, speaking on a panel regarding providing LGBTQIA services in the library on the morning that the Supreme Court decision was announced. I called Molly in England and we cried on the phone together. Such a thrill!

Tell us about the wedding

Our wedding day was absolutely glorious. We were married at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History. Our families were there and our derby friends were there. With their help, we were able to get all of the decorations and planning done ourselves. It was perfect.

True to our derby passion, we skated down the aisle! Everyone got a chance to tour the museum for free, which was a wonderful treat for two people who love the arts as much as we do.We served vegan, gluten-free pizza, salad, and gluten-free cakes. Our guests enjoyed sparkling wine, iced tea, juice, and a huge candy spread. All of the leftover, unprepared food was donated to the women & children's shelter the next day.

What unique elements did you incorporate?

Besides our skate down the aisle and somewhat unusual wedding menu (usual for us), we decided not to have a wedding party, and Jessica's brother married us. We wrote our own vows, which was fun and opted for a quick ceremony of just seven minutes, timed perfectly to get to the good stuff, which for us was celebrating with our friends and family who have supported us through our long distance love, traveling back and forth and finally our beautiful wedding day.
