Jill and Lisa enjoy spending free time with their families and close friends and love taking long road trips. Lisa says : "Jill loves to drive and I love to ride shotgun" ... they love the outdoors and nature, and both say "we are best friends who just love hanging out together."
The couple waited to marry until it was federally legal and fully equal in every state. Though they did get a civil union in 2007 when it became legal in NJ, they saved our celebration until they could be officially and legally married.
Lisa says "honestly, we were both surprised at how nervous we were!" They had the wedding in their home and had the ceremony outdoors in the backyard. A close friend of theirs, Chip, performed the ceremony. The couple wanted an intimate wedding and invited their close friends and close family. “We wanted to celebrate our marriage with the people who have loved us and supported us during the past 20 years." The menu was small plate tapas style food, with beer, wine, liquor and take-away boxes of handmade chocolates from Lore's in Philly. "It was basically a wedding style cocktail party.
The ladies had a short, sweet and romantic ceremony. The funniest moment was when Jill nearly put Lisa's ring on the wrong finger. “The most joyous part was our families cheering and clapping when we were pronounced married. The most touching moment was Lisa's 84 year old father at the end of the night saying
Lisa's sister stood for her, and Jill's sister did the same for her. They did not have a wedding party and decided to use "wife" to refer to each other in the ceremony and since then as well.
Lisa and Jill didn't actively seek LGBT providers. Their friend James who is gay and a florist, did the floral arrangements as a gift. They were both so pleasantly surprised at the enthusiastic reactions from everyone they encountered. Lore's Chocolates staff were so charming and enthusiastic, Elements restaurant has an excellent staff and menu, Shaun Reilly and his fabulous photography, and also Jill's sister Laura. "She has loved and supported us for so many years and she planned almost the entire event for us taking care of every detail up to and during the wedding, including pre- wedding mani's/pedi's!"
If having a home wedding, have someone else handle the details during the wedding so that you can both enjoy without distraction. "Get a photographer!" Jull and Lisa are very happy that they did, he set the stage for them that day and helped create some very private moments even when surrounded by everyone. Also, Lisa and Jill both say "don't be afraid to have a wedding that reflects exactly who you are" it doesn't need to fit into anyone else's mold. "Be yourselves!"
